1) an action in progress that happened in the past.
Kelly and her sister were shopping at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
2)two or more actions in progress that happened at the same time in the past.
Linda was drawing,her mother was cooking and her father was watching T.V.
PAST SIMPLE vs. PAST CONTINUOUS
I was talking on the phone when I got a message.
I was sleeping when the phone rang.
I was having a shower when the fire broke out.
( Για μια πράξη που γινόταν στο παρελθόν και την διέκοψε μία άλλη )
( Η πράξη που έχει διάρκεια ειναι στον past continuous και η άλλη που διακόπτει στον past simple )
when + simple past
BUT
while + past continuous
