A-SENIOR SONG

Boys: What is the name of the state fish of Hawaii?

Girls: Hukunuku…

Boys: It's Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. A long name for a little fish and hard to learn. But there is a song to help you learn how to say Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. Do you know what the name means?

Girls: A fish with a nose like a pig. (δείχνουν)

Humuhumunukunukuapua'a

Girls: Why does such a little fish

have such a great big name?

Just learning how to say it

is driving me insane.

Boys: But it's not hard to learn to do it

while we sing and play.

This great big name is easy

if you follow what I say.

Boys: You just say Humu

Girls: Humu

Boys: nuku

Girls: nuku

Boys: apua'a

Girls: apua'a

Boys: Humu

Girls: Humu

Boys: nuku

Girls: nuku

Boys: apua'a

Girls: apua'a

Boys: Just like a baby has to learn

to crawl before it walks.

You have to take a little at a time.

If you can say a syllable

then you can say a word.

Then you put the words all in a line.

Boys: You just say Humu

Girls: Humu

Boys: nuku

Girls: nuku

Boys: apua'a

Girls: apua'a

(5 times)

All: Now we know the name

of this famous little fish.

Now we can sing it everywhere we go.

And if somebody wonders what we're saying all the while

We'll say "it's o-fish-al" and smile.

All: Humuhumunukunukuapua'a

(10 times)

One of Hawaii's favourite trees is Coconut tree.

In Hawaii, the Coconut is called Niu.

It gives people water to drink and food to eat.

You can make baskets, hats, even drums from the Niu tree.

Let's sing a song for Niu Coconut, our island tree.

Niu Coconut

Niu-Coconut island tree

up in the mountain

down by the sea

Niu-Coconut island tree

up in the mountain

down by the sea

Niu is a giving tree

coconut water, coconut meat

one to drink and one to eat

Haupia pudding is

a yum-my-treat!

Niu Coconut… (twice)

Niu is a giving tree

leaves to weave a funny hat

make a basket, make a mat

you can do it

just-like-that!

Niu Coconut… (twice)

Niu is a giving tree

clap clap clap for you and me

make a song, make a rhyme

round the pahu

keep-ing-time!

Niu Coconut… (twice)

up in the mountain

down by the sea

up in the mountain

down by the sea

Game!
