Expressing Past Habits

 I played chess with my brother at weekends.

 I used to play chess with my brother at weekends.

I would play chess with my brother at weekends.

Note: would is only used in positive sentences, NOT in questions and negatives

Expressing Past States

I lived in Athens when I was ten.

I used to live in Athens when I was ten.

× I would live in Athens when I was ten. (wrong – would is not used in past states)
